We are planning the wedding as fast as we can, which is to no surprise, a huge chaotic circus. We've been having fun at Yelp parties and look forward to the summer with friends and sunshine. Music Revolution and the Resurgence of Vinyl

I figured I'd post a small rant about the state of music today. I want to start by rewinding back to the 80's when we had audio tapes, music request lines and MTV, you know the one that played music on TV. It was a good time, some music was bad, some was great, but there was always a community of sharing. Friends would mix tapes, I'd make my own from the radio. I'd learn about new music from late night MTV shows. Before we had this, we had records. Those big flat pieces of plastic your parents have in the basement. Which contained random simon and garfunkel, but most certainly had one of these artists: Pink Floyd, Santana, Chicago, Boston, Led Zeppelin...yeah it's how it was done back then. Ok Fast forward to the 90's. We stopped making records long ago. Tapes are almost non-existent now. CD's are becoming king. We have music on the same silver disc. Sometimes we get interesting cover art. But for the most part, same plastic case, same silver disc. And we enjoyed it since we had new crazy digital stereos. Some people in the back though weren't very happy with it all. They didn't like what we had done. A couple of labels still thought they had a good thing going with records and kept making them. Once in a while I'd get one. Only because I liked the fact they had large packaging, and colorful medium (colored vinyl exists, they aren't all black). It had been almost 20 years since any of us had put on huge headphones, sat in a bean bag chair, and just rocked out to a record. No one remembered what it was like, what it sounded like, what it felt like. We had become accustomed to wipe ear buds and 256kps bit rates. We're in the 2000's now. That small group if fans in the back has grown. They were angry then, they are outraged now. With the industry dissolution caused by the RIAA lawsuits, record labels went from the place to get great music to the enemy. Indie record labels began to flourish, and you know who worked at these labels? Those people in the back of the room who knew better. Who knew, the true essence of music lied within a piece of pressed vinyl. I have only collected vinyl records for about a decade, But I think it all started when I was younger and my family put headphones on me while i listened to rock records in chicago. I am seeing many new artists releasing on vinyl these days instead of CDs. Sure digital downloads are still available, but the physical media in which people love, is shifting back to the true medium. Vinyl.

So kick back, make some popcorn and put out that 45, put on a record and just close your eyes.

Day late and a dollar short

So, call me old fashioned but I just started listening to ladytron not too long ago. Synthpop, electropop, 8-bit what ever you call it. It's music with some syth sounds. I just wanted to let people know to check out the band Crystal Castles. I'm pretty sure if you're under 25 you know about this band. Since...well it's kinda 80's in a way with the whole 8bit thing going on. And he has lots of moody beats. Anyways back to sounding lame, Another band I respec a lot is the hardcore band HORSE the band. Yes, i said hardcore. It's a lot of screaming and metal. but they have a song that references the power glove..you know that totally UNNECESSARY accessory for the NES. It had like 2 games designed for it.

Fix VMWare Hang on shutdown

If you're trying to install OSX86 or iDeneb or Deadmoo or whatever on your VMware workstation, I've noticed some awful lag on shutdown. Up to five minutes. Add these lines to your virtual machine config and it clears it up.

mainMem.useNamedFile = "FALSE"
mainMem.partialLazySave = "FALSE"
mainMem.partialLazyRestore = "FALSE"

It's important to note since...well, if you're even attempting this, you're bound to run into issues and require tons of reboots. These additions should allow you reboot that machine as fast as VirtualBox. Good luck and hope you get it running!

Music you need and a fruit that you don't

First I'm going to discuss something very near and dear to my heart. It's a fruit that most Americans don't know about. Mainly because it grows on a weed like cactus in Vietnam and it's squishy like a kiwi so transporting it is difficult. For years now, I could not locate a Dragon Fruit to save my life. I saw some random drinks made from it. For a long while I grew it in my window sill, yearning for the year to come when it could bear fruit. Alas, I over watered it or something and it died as many cactus do. So, my dream, after years of botany, were dashed upon the rocks of failure like many an explorer in times past. So, to my amusement, whilst searching for cauliflower in the vegetable isle at Safeway, but what do I see? Why, it is the purple white whale I sought for half a decade! Not a questions was asked, so I bought it, took it home and gazed at the wonder that is the white Dragon fruit. There is a red version, which is pretty much the same, but has a red inner fruit. So I sliced it up and it tasted like crap. Flavorless, strange texture. It is about one of the worst fruits I've ever had. I've had some really bland pears and what not. But this was pretty bad. The seeds were ok, but I don't advise anyone to take up this fruit. I mean it comes from a cactus. There is a reason you don't see prickly pears all over all the fruit aisle, because they are only good as a jelly. So to you Dragon fruit. I say FAIL.

On a lighter note, my new Detektivbyrån CD, Wermland, arrived all goldy goodness with signatures! I will be taking it in this evening to see what the accordion and xylophone wunderkinds have done. This cd is pretty much the most gold I've ever seen in one place. BLORNG BLORNG (That's swedish for BLING). You can get some more information about the band from Last.Fm or from the MySpace page directly. Long story short, they are a post-rock band? nope...not another Sigur Ros I assure you. Basically, it is three guys who know how to play xylophone, accordion and also has some keyboard music in there to. If i were put some META DATA on the music I would use words like, soft, ethereal, fun, uplifting, happy. It's all without vocals so you can really just focus on the talent of these guys. It's really not revolutionary, but it's something that needed to be done. This music will just make you happy. Period. Since I'm a geek, here is the unboxing pictures. YAY LIMITED ADITTIONDASDASD!!!

Cupcake Throwdown?

After a quick turnaround, lydia and I managed to throw together a nice set of red velvet cupcakes for the San Francisco Cupcake Club meetup. Questions I need to answer for myself, does almond extract make a difference, would beet juice/beet baby food make it more moist, should i bake them in a water bath next time! QUESTIONS THAT NEED TO BE ANSWERED. Anyway, I think we did pretty damn well. The frosting was really rich and creamy and held up well in the heat. The recipe for the frosting was pretty simple, butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar and a splash of vanilla extract. I know we need to go over the top next time, and I'm planning big already. Here's another picture...they are as good as they look.

This is a collection of random dishes we threw together over the last few months that I just never posted. I know the ice cream cookie thing seems mundane, but with homemade ice cream and dark chocolate and fresh cookies (i use 4 different sugars), you can taste the difference. I actually had not used cauliflower in forever and dug through my bourdain and batali books to see if there was something in there. I found a simple sautee dish that I adapted.

Here's an interesting find I saw on digg or slash or one of the five million web things i read. It's a fruit that attacks your bitter/sour taste buds and numbs them for a good 30-60 minutes. It has opened up a cool idea for "flavor tripping" parties. Basic rundown, invite a bunch of friends over, layout food you normally wouldn't be too interested in like lemons, grapefruit, super bitter beer or stinky cheese. Chew on the magic fruit for a few minutes and then taste all the unfriendly foods. Beer turns into chocolate, lemons to lemon sorbet, cheese into creamy sweet goo. You get the picture.

I guess after a lot of hard work and years and years of more work, the AFF network has released a usable alpha release. This is a huge mod for Homeworld 2 by Relic Software. It includes a new resource system, ships and some other random tweaks. Note, this is an alpha release but should still be fun!

In other news, Lydia and I attended the SomaFM Holiday Decompression Party (credit to LaughingSquid for the photo) the other day. It was interesting to see so many people with black framed glasses all in one place. And to top it off, they had Diabolik on the LCD screen. We didn't get a ticket so we didn't win any schwag, but I don't care, they keep radio free and every year or so, they get some cash from me.

Happy Holidays! The wrap up!

The holidays were full of food and adventures. We started with a Holiday Party for the NorCal Avanade group. It was a chance to meet all the Avanadeee's from the Bay Area and had some good food. Lydia and I received a really amazing Christmas ornament. From there we went on a nice looooooooong trip to Cabo San Lucas on the southern tip of Baja Sur. We spent the week with family and basically sat by the pool the entire time and drank beer in a bucket. The weather was great, and the food was wonderful as well. We made it through the trip without sickness, but the last day we almost all got the fun stuff. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. The flight home was bumpy and rocky. We made it back and spent a day or so with our toilet but got better. We then made a long trek down to Brea to spend Christmas with Lydia's mother.So here's where the food starts. Before we left we took Martha's recipe for classic sugar dough (not the fancy kind, but the kind you give to the kids). I almost thing this recipe is a copy of the one from an old Sesame Street book I had which had puzzles and cookies recipes. Some of them look like little dogs treats but they aren't! The dough was pretty bland, but really picked up with some sugar coating. All in all it was a good experience and would make them again. I can't stress enough about chilling the dough before cutting though, It's a really big deal! Don't forget it! Christmas in Brea was really nice and the weather was perfect. It was mid 70's when we were there and we spent most of Christmas eve on the beach. So one to the Christmas eve dinner. I decided to make a rolled chicken and pesto dish with steamed veggies and a pomegranate reduction. I was hoping for cherries, but it turns out they don't grow this time of year. So Pom juice was the next best thing. It turned out ok, but the chicken needed some other form of garnish or topping. I've also discovered that sauteed cherry tomatoes are awesome and add great color and flavor to most savory dishes. Go forth and grow some. I like this idea of smaller portions because it forces you to be creative with what you have. Blah Blah what's next. Somehow Lydia managed to track down a Wii. I still think she traded it for black market organs. But we've been playing a lot of Wii Sports and Super Mario World. I think we had thrown out our shoulders by the second night while mastering the power serve in Wii Tennis. I found some really neat hacks for the Wii while researching the device online, this one guy, is really doing some cool tricks with the wiimote using IR tracking. His webpage doesn't seem to always work. Lame. Ok I'm going to wrap up this holiday summary with one more food item which turned out ok, could use a lot of work but could also be really satisfying. Lydia required cheesy baked potatoes with brocolli. So I took a recipe from Whole foods and made a sauce. So that's all good, but what do you do with a ton of steamed brocolli and cheese sauce? How about a soup. Tossed it in the old food chopper thingy and threw in some salt and more cheese and milk and vrooom out pops a soup. Looking back, I don't know if I liked it that much, it needed more something. Not sure what...

So, if you had any sense of humor in the early 90's, you'd remember a show called Mystery Science Theater 3000. A show glued together with a craft glue gun and trash. When I saw it, I was younger and didn't get many of the jokes. I liked the songs, the skits and some of the jokes I understood. As I entered high school I began to catch on to the references. I pretty much owe my entire sense of humor to this show. I thought the sleepy spoken Joel Robinson (Hudson) and the rest of the writers were amazing. The jokes were obscure enough to delight even the greatest fanboy. I recently caught word that *GASP* Joel was working on a new project similar to the show. He went on further to talk about the events that go on in large cinematic companies like ILM called Flecks, where people razz bad movies in the classic fashion. Basically, this is an opportunity for us laugh and cry at bad movies with our favorite guy who was not too different from you or me.

Something Green and Red

I think playing with the concept of the tostada can lead to really cool dishes that are as healthy as they are beautiful. This salada is on a backed wheat tortilla, a little backed cheese, black beans, heirloom tomatoes, salad and cilantro. I capped with lemon juice and avocado. I threw in some chicken that i sautee'd with a sprinkle of paprika and chili powder. So that's all lovely and delicious. This also a word of caution. Never cool with jalapenos or any other spicy chili without gloves. I got some of the oil on my hands and they felt like they were on fire for a day. The entire night and morning I wanted to run them under ice water. Well You live and learn and then you buy some gloves. Things I wish I had in this dish, a roasted red pepper vinaigrette or some sort of dressing based on a pepper.

Reason #4123 Iron Chef America is FAIL

So I just finished watching The Next Iron Chef, which for those who are not in the know....it's a show to find the next Iron Chef in America. Now, I've been watching Iron Chef since around 1999 or so right around the time it stopped taping. I wasn't really in on the ground floor, but I remember Iron Chef Japan 1, 2 and 3. Anyway, I digress...Iron Chef(J)..that's J for Japanese Version, was always a surprise and delight to watch. Iron Chef(US) often attempts to be on the edge of culinary experimentations, but I feel they miss. OFTEN. I think my problem with Iron Chef(US) is the feeling of arrogance that accompanies some of the chefs. Now I really respect Batalli (uhh what he left foodtv to branch out??) and Marimoto. They have consistently showed humility and honor when in kitchen stadium, they also really entertain me! Then there is Bobby Flay. I don't even know what to say. I find it funny that the same man that disrespected the entire kitchen of Iron Chef(J) was allowed to battle in the US as an Iron Chef. So back to this whole US win. I was for Besh the entire way, my friends were for Besh, even my pet newts were for Besh even though they only speak via bubbles and croaks. Honestly, I think they are trying to make it as Vegas as possible. I know the old US of A is all about fireworks, lasers and pickup trucks, but I'd take class over goatee's any day. So hats off to you Symon. You've given me one more reason to watch a rerun of Family Guy instead of Iron Chef(US). Thanks!

Last night I caught a show at the Fillmore. Minus the Bear from Seattle was rounding up the Planet of Ice Tour 2007 to promote the new album. They had been on tour for a while with openers Grand Archives and the Helio Sequence. First impressions are mostly of the "Meh" flavor. The theater was crowded with sixteen year old scene kids. One of them so drunk halfway through the show passed out on the beer covered wood floor and had to be dragged out by a friend. The opening band was actually really entertaining. They used a lot of loops and pre-recorded music to bolster to the two man act. The bear, although didn't come through as great as I had hoped live. Even with six members on stage, I couldn't really figure out where the I was getting out off. Sometimes I felt the back up vocals were not even in harmony with the leads. Dissonance can be a good musical tool, much like color contrast, but this was just lame. I think I even heard the drummer screw up a few times. When you've been around for years, put out a bunch of albums, you should be able to handle a two hour set and not blow it. But that's just me. I hope Minus the Bear finds the way, they have a good sound, but sometimes I hear the same beats and clicks. They need to branch out and experiment more. Isn't that what you're supposed to do when you live in Seattle and jam all time anyway?

Home Brewed Game Mods in Space

I'm sure we all know about Eve Online, the greatest space game ever conceived. But it doesn't allow for any sort of modification. The game doesn't allow modders to tweak and tune. Warcraft allows some hefty modification to its own interface. Most people who are into the Sci-Fi genre know the classics in the field. Wing Commander, Freelancer, Homeworld and Star Trek games. Most of them, were not accessible to interface changes. This article will focus on the modding scene for one particular game. Homeworld was created in the Late 90's by a software company called Relic. They subsequently released an expansion pack for HW:1 and then later in 2003, released a sequel HW:2. These games were somewhat like Starcraft in the fact that they were Real Time Strategies, but we're focused in space, and on unit management. Relic decided to leave the game architecture open, so people could tweak it. This lead to a huge community of modders. Many projects were created and many failed. A few stars began to shine through in 2004 when some Angels Fall First fans decided to create a total conversion of the game. This was similar to Natural Selection for HalfLife, where everything in the game is replaced. This includes ship design, logic and physics. Now this mod had sketches a large dev team and a lot of promises. Eventually the forums were shut down, web pages were not registered and the project was assumed dead. Recently, Relic themselves have opened up their forums to be used for modders to gather and share resources. It was here that we learned the AFF mod was actually back in full swing and making great strides towards completion. This is basically my chance to hype this great game and a great mod that we all hope will be completed eventually. Dust off that copy you have stored in your mom's attic and install it. These games are still having life breathed into them every day. Sometimes the best games are the ones you forgot you had. You will find there are many mods for every need. Chicken in a Blanket

Most of my meals are based in desperation. Lack of supplies is sometimes the catalyst to my creations. Tonight was based on my freezer supply of chicken and some ham. I have a rosemary plant outside which also supplied some taste. Basically, it's a chicken breast wrapped in panchetta and rosemary on a bed of penne with parmesan and butter and parsley. Roasted in the oven with olive oil. Often this results in a dry chicken, but the blanket keeps it happy and flavorful.

I have been reading a lot of food blogs lately, to my surprise, I've been finding gems. This weeks yum was found at chocolate & zucchini. I took the recipe and tried to create a fun plate with it. If you have an ice cream maker, I suggest you check it out. It's like eating a frozen dark chocolate bar. Super rich, you were warned! If you follow the recipe you will see the ingredients are simple. Sugar, water, cocoa, vanilla and chocolate. What kind and variety of each of the these pieces will change the flavor profile accordingly. Always used natural, always use the best, you will not regret it.

Pizza! Where's my Cheez???

So who likes pizza? Well duh. I wanted to try something a little different this time and omit the cheese. Hell, I wanted to omit the cow. And this was a good start. Call this version 0.1 of my no cheese pizza. It's not a vegi pizza...a little piggy gave it's life to make sweet sweet prosciutto. You could also consider this a glorified bruschetta, but we are using actual active dough opposed to day old day. I think the key to making a no cheese pizza is experimenting with your vegies and meats. One thing to always consider is the wet/dry ratio. Many a home-made pizza is ruined by piling on wet vegies that soak into the dough while baking. All the software you need is listed below. As for the hardware, you really just need the 3 essentials for creating a great pizza. Pizza Stone, Pizza Peel (wood thing that moves it) and a quick hands to make a nice round dough. All of the ingredients listed do not need any prep work besides slicing and dicing. The ham will cook in the oven.

Mushrooms (hearty ones for baking)
Tomato Sauce (See Mario Batali)
Yellow Heirloom Tomatoes
A Cured Ham Slice
Trader Joe's Dough ($0.99 ftw)
Salt/Pepper/Italian Spices/Herbs
Corn Meal (gives you that crunchy bottom/easy removal from oven)

Braised Lamb with Mushroom and Sage Ragu

Take that EVOO, and braise the shanks until brown on all sides, lightly season them while cooking with some salt/pepper. In a large pot, sauté (with EVOO)the onions, add mushrooms and garlic. Lightly salt the mushrooms so they give up their juicy goodness. when things start to get stuck to the pan, de-glaze with 1 cup of red wine. Drink the other. now add the beef stock and tomatoes. If you light super chunky, don't mash them up, otherwise run them through a potato rice or similar food mill. Drop in your shanks and make sure they are covered. Add some sage, herbs and basil and let cook for a while...at least 1.5-2.5 hours. This will let the sauce reduce and the meat to loose it's toughness as the muscles break down in the heat and acid. Before that it done, heat up a few quarts of water, bring to boil, salt to hell and make your favorite pasta. Rigatoni's are good as they have lots of little ridges to grab ragu. Plate as a shank, or strip the meat from the bone and reconstitute it back into the ragu. Serve with some cheese and maybe a little fresh basil on top.

Rational Clearcase DIAF

So how many hours do I have to spend searching for a command on how to add a bunch of files at once. Ok I ask co-workers "I wrote a script for that, but it's not test for production" Ok, "we had a bat file for that somewhere, it was on a laptop on the ground, is it still there? No? oh that sucks". I read the IBM forums, "This is 2004! and we can't do a select all???". I was starting to feel defeated, but eventually I found a small post that didn't get much attention. Maybe because it was a GUI based post. I don't know why i wrote this...but if you want to recursively add files to source control in the gui native client for Clearcase, just right click the parent directory and search. Just search for all files and hit ctrl+a. Now right click them and go to the explorer integrated Clearcase commands. Click add to source control. Migration done. peace.

Something amazing. John Carpenter created a film that no one has yet lived up to. I'm talking about "They Live". At first, you're thinking, Oh great another zombie movie. But it doesn't actually have the living dead I think. Which confused me at first...because it seems like there should be zombies, but maybe aliens? We'll get to that in a moment. This movie stars two actors which I think have done more for film than a hundred Jimmy Carters could have done for crack heads in the south. I don't really want to write a spoiler in here, so I will just give my thoughts. I first saw this film on an old vhs Lydia's roommate had at the house. I watched it, laughed, cried, etc. I thought to myself, who would watch this shit. This is one of those films Gilbert Gottfried/Randa Shear would give the thumbs down to. So again, I asked, who would watch this. I got my chance to find out. Lydia and I went to the Castro Theater one night because we saw it was playing there. We show up. Seems like a few people were there. We stocked up cookies for sure...we go in, and the fans pour in. The theater is packed with people. And everyone is really into it. Through out the movie people were quoting lines, it was great. In the end, you have a movie with two great leads, some aliens (sorta-maybe?), punching, magic sunglasses, hobos, blind crazy priests and the best one liners I think ever created. Bruce Campbell I'm sure has highly competitive ones, but it's honestly a toss up.

Oh did i mention Rowdy Roddy Piper is in it? Basically, this movie was so great, I can't even tell you what it's about really. All I can do is tell you, that as a man, as a human man. This is one of the best movies you will see in your mortal life. And Jesus will have a hell of a time providing you with a finer piece if art once you kick over. Also, this guy over on another blog rated this film and reviewed it, and I'm gonna have to agree with him...he wasn't going to rate the film but in the end gave it a "one hundred million billion". I think it's a fair score.

Money, Power, and Web 2.0

We all know "teh internets" is serious business. And Web 2.0 is doubly so..because it's twice as serious as web 1.0. Companies and people are always trying to find a way to target ads correctly to the public. We've learned to ignore them, hide them and filter them. But what happens when the ads are not in plain sight. What happens when we think we're seeing news, but we are really seeing agenda or faux advertisments. We'll talk about that in a second. A big factor in the world of web traffic is the "Slashdot Effect" and now in the web 2.0 world, the "Digg Effect". To sum up, you get a story posted on one of these pages, and traffic to your site will soar, and possibly set your server on fire. Why would anyone want this though, sounds painful. The first thing you have to understand is readership. Slashdot, Digg and other pages like it, command huge followings. Thousands? Try Hundreds of thousands. How much would it be worth to have a few hundred thousand people see your ad and click on it? Quite a bit. 500K clicks to your web page nothing to laugh at.

One thing to note is that these web pages are community driven. People, anyone, submits stories and they get posted. Slashdot has a group editors that post stories for the users, while Digg allows anyone to post anything. If the story is good enough it makes it to the front page of Slashdot or Digg's top 10. These stories can be up there for a good 12 hours or more, command click after click.

Slashdot first took advantage of this to help pay for the site. It decided to start posting "Adver-stories", or fake articles about a product. Basically a company gives Slashdot some money, and Slashdot takes a story and publishes on their front page in the form of a new article or "cool must have item". A lot of readers can spot this and are ok with it, knowing it's just an ad. Digg on the other hand is all user based and has no need for this form of revenue generation. The fatal flaw in Digg is the fact that humans are fallible and even more easily swayed by monetary compensation. After reading about the concept on Uncov, I looked into it and realized the concept is good...pay people to get stories bumped to the top. Buy your way into the eyes of the public. The concept is as old as time. Grease the wheels and you can get far.

Web 2.0 is based off the concept of community driven content. It's social networking around a service. Twitter, Stumbleupon, Digg all are based off content some 13 year old kid posted, or some random politician posted. We trust these site, we trust that the content is genuine because it's written by me, my buddy, some internet friend in Arkansas or something. But since the fact remains that humans can be swayed with cash pretty easily, what's to stop someone from using the system for their own gain, or political gain. Here's an example (totally random, don't read into it):

Republican posts stories/text on Digg, Twitter, Stumpleupon, wordpress and 20 other places stating that a rival democrat is a drug abuser.

Democrat posts stories/text on Digg, Twitter, Stumpleupon, wordpress and 20 other places stating that a rival republican is a drug abuser.

So at this point, it's in the hands of the public. But remember, at this point all these stories are buried and the half a million viewers won't see it unless it gets voted into the top 10. So chances are no one will read these stories, or at most a few hundred. Now in steps the middle man, who can change the game. A webpage that pays people to give up their votes on pages like Digg for cash. Let's continue.

A group working for the Republican sets up an account on one of these pages and gives them a list of 5-6 web pages they need hits on. The web page passes out these pages via emails to their user base and the users go use up their votes.

It only takes a few hundred to vote a story up to the top. And then everyone will see it. Soon hundreds of thousands click the link and read the article. Articles like this sometimes get linked to, and end up on Google News which has an even larger reader base.

This was obviously an extreme case, but let's look at it realistically. This is already happening with stories, people pay per click to get stories up, but think of the power you can wield politically with the techno crowd which commands a huge following. You can't police the people's votes and money talks. In this scenario, a politician has purchased half a million ears/eyes to their story, and the democrat was never heard.

So ask yourself, since teh internets is such a serious business, who can you trust when you can buy popularity.

One of the joys of living in a small town is the "local event", the event that defines the area. When I lived in the Santa Ynez Valley, we had our Old Santa Ynez Days and Danish Days. When I lived in Santa Barbara, we celebrated the lemon with the Goleta Valley Lemon Festival. Now that I am residing in Marin County, I yearned for a sense of belonging. I was looking for that event that defined the region. Sure we have wine festivals up here...but I think I found what I was looking for at the Sonoma-Marin Fair. Once you get past the star struck awe that is "Cheap Trick", you'll see something else. A contest you say? Pie eating? no...How about ugliest dog? This event celebrates mother nature's actions while she was on LSD, or just finished watching 2 seasons of LOST back to back without sleep or blinking. After the wonderful event, I took a few snapshots to show you the wonders nature provides us, or the horror of which should have been put back into the oven until it was done....One thing I can't really convey to the reader, is the fact none of these dogs have any teeth...so there's a lot of bubble, tongue and liquid action going on. One dog only opened one eye because his other was under constant siege from his tongue which he had no control over. If i got these names wrong, let me know. They were all equally hideous, so I might have mixed them up.

Ripped from Mashable, here are some cool new web 2.0 sites out there that might help people out.

Deligio: sort of a simple software search tool. It uses tags and comments to help you really get what you're looking for. It seems to suck right now, but it is just now getting some press, so I think in a few months it will be very usable. I fear it could be abused and become hard to use, like freshmeat (to some people fm is awesome, but the more you add the harder it becomes to use).

Cork'd: This page allows you to list wines you own and love, and lets you browse what others think about those wines. If you love wine and want to find more, this is a nice little web app.

KillerStartups: Sort of a list of new web 2.0 apps sorted by "digs". the interface is a little ghetto, and I question how valid the rankings are since it looks like the user base is pretty small.

Music, Social Networking and YOU

It's been a while since I really wrote a blog. Today's topic is the music scene and how social networking/web 2.0 is affecting it's proliferation. So social networking is a term thrown around a lot, one of my favorite blogs for keeping up to date with the scene is Mashable. It's basically a site that keeps track of updates in the social networking world. If facebook adds a feature to allow you to send a flaming poo filled bag to your friends porch, you'll hear about it on Mashable. Let's talk about music. Music is one of those things that most people enjoy, but have no clue on how to get into it. MTV/Radio are the places most people go for their info. Friends are a great source since they know what you are into. I was recently told to check out an application called Songbird. Songbird is the brainchild of two former application developers from Nullsoft (Winamp) and Mozilla, the open source browser which kicked off Firefox. Songbird is a merging of minds in this arena. It blends the flexibility of a browser with the needs for multimedia. This application blends some of the internet 2.0 concepts and creates a one stop interface for media on the web. It uses the interface of Mozilla/Firefox to give the user the ability to browse the web in teh context of music. You have your browser pane, but you also have a media player bar and a play list. Let's say you browse to a blog with indie rock mp3's posted on it, Songbird will then scan those files and put them in a playlist. You can browse bookmarks and just listen and stream music from webpage. This application is in beta stages and still has some kinks. It also has basic iPod integration as well, so it will soon be able to replace iTunes. Since it is built off of the Mozilla/Firefox framework, skins are changeable as well as adding extensions. Within an hour of using it was already checking out new bands and finding out about them. Social Networking you say? Well aside from being able to listen to music and download it from any music blog on the web this application can work work Last.fm. Last.fm is a social networking site developed for the soul purpose of linking people through music. It takes your play list and lets you manipulate it on the site. This lets you link it to other bands. This requires you to run a last.fm application on your computer that knows what you listen to. This protocol or action is called Scrobbling. There's a plug-in for songbird which kinda/sorta works located here. This combination of social networking, media browsing and just listening allows us to listen to music, see if other listen, see what they like too. So my suggestion is to check out these application, give them a shot, you never know you might get into music again.

On a more personal note, things are going good, I get to work on GIS at work. It's weird, back in the day I wanted to work on this stuff. I wanted to get into it while at Cuesta and SFSU. I remember walking past the GIS labs and wondering if i should take the classes. Glad I didn't then, but now i wish i had. It should be a lot of fun and very rewarding.

The year was 2005. I was working at FFIC, and I was addicted. Addicted to a potato treat.

Tater Tots.

Yes...the fried, greasy, salty delicacy that I loath.

My resolution for the year of 2006 was simple. Not to eat a single tater tot. This was obviously a symbolic gesture, as I still ate my share of french (freedom!) fries, and has browns once in a while.... The entire point of this was to use will power to say no to something I enjoyed.

This year, I am stepping it up. My no no's this year? High Fructose Corn Syrup

It's the sugar base for many, many drinks. It's a speciall processed form of sugar that is easily mixed into many products. And it's not super bad for you, but there are better ways to get sugars into your body. Just a little fact, if you drink just 5 sodas/snapples a week, that's 2 cups of sugar right there. And thats if you drink regular sized ones from burger king etc.

I've been sober of tater tots for 1 year 1 month now. And sober from soda/gateraid/snapple etc for a month.

So, there is a comet that can be seen from the southern hemisphere, but I had the change to catch it from Point Reyes in Marin County. I saw a nice sunset and was able to see the comet for about 5 minutes. I snapped this image, but obviously it came out crap. If you squint or tilt your head you can kinda see it. It looked amazing in person. On the horizon. I guess I could post most pictures...

So one thing I collect, or collected, was toys made by Jim Woodring. In case you think, toys, they are actually known as Urban Vinyl. It's basically toys for adults you don't play with, more art than toy. I became a fan of Jim a few years back when he released a series of toys based on my favorite pet, newts. Anyways, he's releasing soon, or somehting a new toy based off some frog guy in a animal car. It's kinda crazy looking and not many people think it's cool. I'd like to take this time away from my day to say how deeply wounded I was upon hearing the death of Steve Irwin. Not many people today use thier money the same way he did. A lot of celebs spend it on multiple Mercedes, granite counter tops they never dirty and huge pools they never swim in. Steve used what he had to make people aware of the plight animals face today. You are loved and missed Steve. If you had to go, It was doing what you loved.

So much has happened the last week, I don't where to begin and who to thank.

First, I'd like to thank the BBC for this awesome headline today:
'Two dead' in fresh Turkey blast. My first thought, was...dear god, they finally did it, they blew up a turkey and it killed people. A vision of giblets and feathers and death, oh wait it was about a terrible even in the middle east. Damn.

Next, I'd like to thank the director of Snakes on a Plane and subsequent Music Video. I saw this film this weekend. I went into it thinking, Ok, it is what is right? A movie with Sammy Jackson swearing and fighting snakes. This movie lived up to my vision and I loved it! I was laughing my ass off half the time and the other half being slightly surprised. Complaints, The dog didn't die first. Come on, the little yapper dog should have been first to go. You will love this film if you have any funny bone in you at all.

I'd also like to thank Keith Olbermann for his good reports he does. Here's an older report he did that I caught on YouTube, it's a report linking all the bad press for the bush administration to terror alerts.

Finally, the hippy people at the renaissance festival in SF this last weekend. Hippies are great and all, they encourage things like sustainable food sources and henna tattoos of random suns with faces. But I laughed out loud when I say you sorta half-assed dressed up for the faire. Here's why, a hippy is just a stones throw from a Renaissance actor. You got the crappy handmade handmedown smelly cloths/dresses and boots. But instead of riding a horse, you have a bike. Instead of a loot, you have a cell phone with a crosby stills and nash ringtone. You shouldn't get 2 festivals I say. Hippys, stay out of my 15$ admission medieval England!

Hi, I'm Tom Cruise. I can turn chicks cRaZy! It's fun. I took a normal looking girl (and by normal, I mean only is attractive after 4 hours of putting on 500$ worth of MAC, come on you know it's true....) and turned her CrAzY too! So where we at??? My fern came the fuck back to life. I used the power of starvation and apparently I over water my plants sometimes. So using will power and restraint I saved my Ghost Fern (Athyrium niponicum var. pictum x Athyrium filix-femina). It looks great. Work is going well. I'm in the code zone, not to be confused with the cone zone. I posted some really great charts on my cube wall which inspire me every day to become a construction worker. Trader Joes just opened near my work, so I've switched to buying all my food from there. That's it.

I get to thinking a lot about how people are concerned about the enviroment, the planet and the air and the soil. Being raised on star trek, star wars, babylon 5, voltron, gobots, autobots AND decepticons...I can say with honesty, we will fuck up our planet and we will have to get the hell out of dodge. My opinion on the enviroment is this. living creatures have been around for about 1 billion years. Humans have been around for a about hundred thousand. Wow, we've been here for .01% of the time since creatures started doing what creatures do. (is that math correct? I took calculus twice...) Anyways. In the grand scheme of things, we aren't even a fleas fart in the wind of the universe. So why do people get so concerned? In 40 years you'll be worm food anyways. an 140, your kids will be worm food. So you're worrying about 0.0000001% of the history of earth? Hrmm.....

Here's where it gets interesting. So now that greenhouse gases are making our planet warmer (god it was a hot winter this year, i think it hit 12 degrees F in chicago). When we fuck up our planet in the 0.000001% of history we're working on here...where do we go, check this out:

Adapt as Las Vegas becomes a tropical rainforest and all plants go apeshit with all the CO2 in the air.
Move to Mars, which with some planning can become livable (water+rich soil=plants and plants=air)

If we all stay, it will take hundreds of years but everything will change, NY, SF, LA, Oak, Portland, etc will be underwater, which is cool, we can move on, bums will just have to shoot up on the mountain tops and urinate on cars that on high ground.

If we move to mars, who is gonna go. Rich people, and Smart people. Which begs the question. What happens if a planet is founded on rich smart people. What will the focus be. Power? Control? Universal Remotes that wipe your own ass? How do we as a society protect the culture and history of our checked and beautiful past?

You think Craig Berstein the Planatry Zoologist gives a fuck about the new indie bands? Or if Mr. Winterfogchestingtonville the 4th cares about what artists in Soma are doing? They don't and what ever society we begin with them at the helm won't either. So again i ask, what's the answer? As we slowly kill ourselves, are we going to adapt or flee (which seems to be our thing!)

I got an email from the automated mailing thingy about my loyalty bonus we get after 8 months of service. (why 8? wtf? I guess if goes along with being paid on the 7th and 22nd??) Yeah, so the email said, congratulations on your achievement in your Career with blah blah." It's the first time I realized that I was in a Career and not a job. All my life, I've had a job. Something I did to make money and that was it. Not something that would work WITH me to make money. This job is crazy, I get a coach who helps me work related choices who I talk to once in a while to make sure I'm doing everything right in my plans. I'd never have that in a "job". I'm in a good place, I'm thankful for what has been given to me. I just hope I can make my life a little less stressful this week....

Gracie is moving this weekend and I couldn't be happier. She needs to move to a better place. I've been treating her like shit the last few months....

San Francisco is a funny place. You meet people in the wierdest places. Even on a BBS. People post a few lines and you get an email. Craigslist may not have given me too many dates but they sure as hell were interesting and sure as hell lived up to the craigslist standards of insanity. Craigslist did a film about the goings on in craigslist and it's showing at the red vic this month. I love craigslist. It's given me work, furniture, plants, kisses and hugs and possibly an std...should get that rash checked out...

Asian Culture and Modern Society

Living in San Francisco I am very aware of the culture that surrounds me. One thing that I see a lot of is the people walking the streets every day. Living in the Sunset/Richmond District, I am near a large population of the Asian community. Which brings me to today's topic. Why do a majority of the asian people not look when crossing the street, or when they do look, just walk and not take the car's position into the equation. Now, I started making note of this at least a year ago.

When I pull up to an intersection and there is a pedestrian, thye have a choice. Walk, or let me go through the intersection. 99% of every asian person, will walk. Even if I've been sitting there for 5 minutes. I've also notice that a large percentage of non-asian's will stop, assess the situation, and decide whether to walk not. Many times have non-asian's looked at me, noticed i've been waiting for pedestrians for a while, and wave me through. I have yet to experience this from some of asian decent.

Is this a cultural thing? Why can't I drive through an intersection in an asian community?

P.S. This is just my opinion and not to be taken too seriously, but I am telling the facts, those figures I posted are real and not made up, I counted. and it sucks.

People who abuse the law

I have a special hatred for people who force personal agenda's on the public because they are in a certain legal position. This includes lawyers and lawmakers who have a view on something and assume they should make it law. For the past half a year Jack Thompson has been fighting against the Video Game industry saying the age old proverb "Violent Games=Violent Children". My personal view on this has always been "Shitty Parents=Shitty Kids". Every person I know who plays violent games, has never commited a crime and rarely smashes a spider in the bathroom. That's not the point. Recently, GTA and Sim's 2 came under fire as being too extreme because of hacks. Jack Thompson took it upon himself to fight the good fight against games because the public is too stupid to know when to fight... As a joke he said he would donate 10K to a charity if someone could make a game where you could kill lesbians and kids workign in video game stores. Someone did, and he said his claim was satire and just complained more...Penny-Arcade has launched a comic assult on him for being an ass and he fired back saying it's harrassment. A lot of this can be summed up by this shirt. When Jack turned on his promise, Penny-Arcade donated 10K to the charity for him and he returned the favor by faxing the local authorities that PA was harrassing him.

Lets sum it up:
1) Jerk Sues Video Game Industry
2) Video Game Industry makes a funny shirt about him
3) He gets mad and claims he'll give $10K to charity if someone does something
4) Video game industry does it
5) Jack resends his offer
6) Video game insdustry donates 10K to charity

How can he be more of an asshole? Anyone?

I purchased new hardware for the photo server, finally, after like 6 months? Anyways...two brand new shiney 80 gig harddrives are being shipped as we speak along with a new dual layer DVD Burner, so I can finally make some hard copies of the crap i have. AKA, farscape, cowboy beebop, ducktales, super mario borther super show and......some other sci-fi junk.

Once this is all installed I will move over all the photo's and move the ones on the desktop to the server for all to see. Yeah, it's been a while I know. But, www.fire-belly.com will be back in action in no time.

What's new in my life? Not much, just working the 9-6 m-f thing. There's going to be a lot of downtime during the holidays so I'm going to enjoy my time in Chicago/Minnesota again.

i don't have anythign to write. That's the most sad part. I wish I had soem crazy story to spew. I don't. Everything has slowed down. It's all a routine now. Punch in, punch out. blah blah. Why is it so hard to relax in a big city. I was thinking, when i was working 11 hour shifts at the TV station, I still had a lot of time to kick back and take off for a weekend. I could still go fishing and do what ever i wanted. I'm working fewer hours now and feel twice as stressed. I don't even have school anymore! so I don't know what the deal is. suggestions? anyone? Any spammers out there want to sell me ~~snake~~ fish oil air sanitizer?

Oh I can talk about my dive into the world of "eating out". Not the good dirty kind, but the bad dirty kind...FAST FOOD OR TAKE OUT.

I have eaten more burritos, chinese take out, burgers, blts, fried chicken, french dips, etc than I care to talk about. 5 days a week, for the last month or so. I hate the way I feel. I hate the way my wallet feels. It's an extra 10$ a day. I feel fat sometimes hahah. Anyways. This is the corp life in so many places. If you've ever seen office space. That's what it's about. Flippers, Chotsky's etc. The extreme fajitas and all the flare. I wish there was a better way to deal with it. I'm never hungry anymore, but that doesn't always mean good things.

So I guess I dedicated this weekend to a hard core Firefly-a-thon. This series is a great example of decent story and characters you can relate to. The theme itself, that of a the Space Cowboy was done in Star Wars to some extent. I also saw a few parallels to Cowboy Bebop. Bebop was a cartoon a few years back done in japan where a group of ragtag bounty hunters did odd jobs to stay fed while patrolling the border colonies of the solar system. The scenes were out of a western. Firefly made me feel like I was watching a live version of it at times. I really gives the impression of how society can degrade depending on the distance of the home government. I sometimes think this is how the universe will be in the end. A high tech center and a decaying outer rim where progress becomes regress. This is where I always wanted to be since I was young. Before you rush off and see Serenity, go rent the DVD, it's 15 episodes. I think you'll be pleased. You can become a fan with a lot less effort than it takes for Farscape and it's less obscure than SPACE:Above and Beyond or Babylon 5.

Anyways, Serenity is coming out this friday and everyone should go rent Firefly and beef up on your Sci-Fi. Also, DooM the movie is coming out too. So yeah, Last night was the new episode of Lost on ABC. I watched the first season fanatically. I taped episodes I would miss. I re-watched them a few times. It's a strange show. It has a lot of elements of Sci-Fi and drama. I think it's one of the best shows on TV right now, but it's one of those shows if you haven't seen it from the beginning...you will go "What...The...fuck....was...that...". I'm also going to check out Firefly because I missed it when it aired on Fox. I liked Farscape and it's easy to entertain me via space shit.

On a side note: Ancient Greek males between the ages of 20-30 courted young men and forced them to par-take in sexual acts. They gave us art, science, law...and homosexual pedophilia!! AWESOME!

My cell phone bill is really outrageous. Over time minute charges? Nope. Strange Features? Nope. I did a calculation and the gov't taxes and various fees on my cell phone bill account for OVER 25% of the bill. 25% is a huge number and that should be disclosed at the time of sale. 25% is a lot of money for me. That's burrito money! That's new socks money! That's 1 gallon of gas money (joke intended)!

In other news, I got a ticket for street cleaning. Here's a run down of what side of the street is cleaned on what day.. In order starting from Park Presidio. Thursday, Tuesday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Tuesday, WEDNESDAY, MONDAY. Wtf kind of pattern is that. That sure makes things easy to remember. "Streets are in order, except every other block alternating on every other..."

And once again, Who ever hit my car and ran without leaving a note. DIE.

My morning commute is nice. It's a 25 minute drive up the coast. I get to drive over this everyday. It's relaxing and the commute is really fast. I was parking Gracie last night and some old man on a bike comes up to me and is like, I have a yellow '67. So he bikes up the street while I'm trying to not hit this VW bus while parking..he comes back down the street in a pretty nice 4 dr dart. Had a 273 in it, so he chirps the tires and takes off. I want to be an old man with a car when I get old.
