Clients clients everywhere, but not a 39.95 to drink!
Software companies hire people to develop the latest and greatest thing in the world, at least in thier minds. Things like, GPS software or porn trackers. Today I'm talking about weblog clients. Or as I like to call them, elusive steaming piles of crap. This entire entry is being written on a client written for Blogger APIs and is called w.Bloggar version 4.00. Why the need for two zeros after the 4? I'm not sure. This client hasn't seen an update since march, so development isn't what we called super sonic. After searching through dmoz.org, our favorite open directory, I found a gaggle of clients for the common weblog architechtures such as moveable type and blogger. But one after another, I clicked to find it was either a super bloated java app, an OSX app, which is no good to me now, or a pay posting tool. Now, why on earth would I pay 40$ for something I can use in a browser and get the same conclusion. The problem is, people write crappy little apps, then sell the rights to software companies which turn and market them. w.bloggar is one of the few who wrote and application and said, "Geewiz, I think the world would love using this as much as I do, I have a job already so let it be free". So some guy enjoys programming in his free time and benefits society. He gets his money through donations via pay pal. I'm sure it's not a lot of cash, but I bet it's enough to make it worth his while. Moral of the story is, if you made something, and have a soul, free it and you will be rewarded.
