I am a part time nerd, part time chef and full time whiner. Did I type whiner? I meant winner...no wait, I whine a lot. I've worked in High Tech and Television and a few places in between. I've eaten fire roasted snakes and hand fulls of peeps (not in the same sitting of course). I'd like to share my experiences, so read on.

Blogstuff: New phishing and spam techniques

As stated before I love the random function of Blogger. I get to see a bunch of random stuff I would never imagine. Most of it is pure crap, but it's new to me. Which is cool. I sat and clicked Next a bunch of times, to see how random it was and what was actually being displayed. The results were, not great.

  • 20% - Fake blogs, made by Spammers/Phishers to trick users. Subjects ranged from Lawyers to Spring Break.
  • 20% - Crap blogs, first blogs or blogs of 1 post and no susbtance
  • 40% - Non-English. A lot of Blogger, I can't even read. Which is cool
  • 10% - Honest english blogs. Political, and personal. Most of these are just people ranting
  • 10% - Teenager angst blogs
You milage may vary. But you have a good 10% chance of seeing something slightly entertaining. Or a good 80% chance of being disappointed. I like those odds!

My main issue here is the first figure. 20% is a lot. 1 in 5. Fake or harmful blogs. These are blogs filled with links and pictures, generated by a script to link back to a advertising company. Who in turn will try and install virus/spyware.

Protect yourself! These are all free and very powerful.
